University Community Video (UCV)

UCVideo was formed in 1974 to provide community access to media tools. Learn hear about our UCVideo survey, our UCVideo anniversary project and proposed UCVideo documentary .

Welcome fellow UCV staff, members, trainers, producers, advocates, participants and supporters. We are launching an expanded UCV research effort to gather insights and feedback on your UCVideo/Intermedia Arts MN experiences.

Please complete the google-form survey at this link:
Survey about University Community Video
It’s only about 15 questions and should take under 10 minutes. Your personal data is secure and will be used only to keep you informed about our UCV projects and our development efforts.

Background
Since 2016, Minnesota Media Arts has been researching the UCV/Intermedia Arts Minnesota Video Collection and files donated to the Minnesota Historical Society back in 1994. MNHS has completed a 2022 Council on Library Information Resources (CLIR) Recordings at Risk grant for the digital preservation of the collection's 1/2" EIAJ and 3/4" u-matic video tapes. Only the archived programs that have cleared "producer-copyright" rights have smaller viewable "access" in-line movie links. Go to this link to view the collection's two part Finding Aid:
Intermedia Arts Minnesota Video Collection and use our survey form (link above) or our Contact Form to alert us if you’d like a copyright assistance form to help release your programs.

We have two projects in development that we would appreciate hearing your feedback on.

First, we are planning a 50th Anniversary Celebration Event with a possible online "call-in" via google meet option. It will be a celebration of UCV and it's pioneering series "Changing Channels” that was first broadcast in the fall season on October 9th, 1974 featuring three segments; 10:00 “Bonnie Raitt at the Cabooze Bar, 8:00 “Feel Good Look Great Modeling show” and 11:00 Riz Newsola. We are still looking for The pilot program “Communitube” broadcast earlier on February 13th, 1974. Please let us know if you have a copy, as we have ½” EIAJ transfer services in-house to digitize the program.

Second, we are continuing the development of our UCV documentary Project about the alternative media center, its scope, programming and outreach in the 1970's-80's. We are preparing an October 2024 grant for MNHS funding and would like your feedback and insights on the UCV experience for inclusion in that grant request. Please complete the survey, we value your input! Target deadline: Sept 19, 2024

We’ve also created a separate UCV Documentary Campaign page for more historical background information and the opportunity to support this project directly by making your donation online at our secure GiveMN fundraising page.

DONATE EQUIPMENT to this non-profit project

Media Equipment Crisis: The majority of early video formats; ½” EIAJ open reel, ¾” U-Matic videocassettes and 1” VTRs along with consumer VHS and Betamax VCRs are rapidly becoming obsolete. We're also developing an audio archive conversion suite for reel to reel, audiocassette and Digital DAT tape.

MNMA accepts qualified donations of functioning VHS and Betamax videocassette recorders as well as professional audio, video, and film equipment. We are also experiencing a difficult time securing qualified operators and repair technicians.
